Beat the Summer Heat
We’ve already headed into the sweltering days of summer! High humidity combined with record temperatures create a phenomenon known in Chinese Medicine as “Summer Heat with Dampness.”
During these hot humid days you might experience: irritability, dizziness, heaviness in the head (like a wet towel wrapped around your forehead), fogginess, confusion, a dragging sensation in your limbs, profuse sweating (as your pores open wide to help cool you off), nausea and lack of appetite. If you have autoimmune issues, these symptoms might be more pronounced for you as heat and damp are both inflammatory. So what can we do to work with these “dog days” of summer? Below are a few tips to help you beat the humid heat. Drink water. I know! This tip is so boring but it’s essential. Summer is a great time to sip throughout the day rather than waiting until you get thirsty! Stay hydrated and watch out for caffeine which will end up working against you. Watermelon! Watermelon juice can be made by simply blending watermelon for thirty seconds in a blender. It will turn frothy and yum. Drink one glass a day, maybe two, but, be careful, as loose stools will result if you overdo it. Cool baths. Submerge yourself in water! This is especially helpful if you don’t have Air Conditioning in your home, Take several cool baths throughout the day to rebalance with the weather. Wear white and light-colored clothing when you do venture outdoors. White will reflect the sun. Darker colors absorb the heat. Drink cool, but not cold, drinks. I know that ice seems like the quickest cool-down but iced drinks will make your digestion more sluggish, resulting in you using extra energy to get your stomach back up to its ideal temperature. This will ultimately just make your body crave even more liquids. If you’re someone who struggles with summer and really tanks out in this weather, consider coming in for acupuncture. Acupuncture can help you rebalance internally so that the external heat doesn’t sap your strength! If you have questions about how acupuncture can help you, please connect with me!
