Hope: A Powerful Medicine

April 15, 2016

Hope is a powerful medicine. When you have hope, it’s a lot easier to drop the struggle. This letting go allow you to work effectively with the situation you’re struggling with. In opening up to what’s present for you, you can start to envision what tiny step to take next.

When you’re struggling with chronic illness or an ongoing health concern, it’s easy to start sliding from hope into despair. Sometimes you can feel like nothing will ever get better. It’s easy to start to feel doomed or locked-in.

Because I often help women with chronic illness in my practice, I’ve started paying attention to a few secret indicators that let me know that someone is starting to heal. I say “secret” because these signs don’t always seem to point directly towards healing, but I’ve learned that they can be early indicators that someone is headed in the direction they want to be going.

If you don’t know what to look for, or if you’re tangled up in your symptoms, it’s easy to feel discouraged and to quit before you can really get the results you want. This is why it’s helpful to have an acupuncturist or another health practitioner helping you watch over your healing process and objectively charting your progress so that you don’t give up before you get to where you wanted to be.

It’s also important to pay attention to these landmarks because healing isn’t always linear. (In fact healing is rarely linear and is more like a spiral.) Think of any bad break-up you’ve had in your romantic life or any sudden and unexpected change in your work or your life, the trajectory towards feeling like yourself again isn’t usually very tidy or neat.

I made a quick video (under three minutes long) with a case study featuring an example from my practice of common signs that someone is starting to heal.

You can watch it on youtube here.

I would love to hear what you think about it. You can leave a comment on youtube or contact me here. Happy Spring!
