Dare to Dream: An Exercise to Help You Relax & Expand

I recently received this text from a patient I have only seen a couple of times.

 

“Hi Monica! I just wanted to tell you that, despite my lower back hurting, I was just able to walk about a mile in Mt Airy for a music festival. I was never able to walk that far without sitting down 20 times. There was no sciatic pain on the right side going down my leg and no foot numbness on my right foot. I owe that to you.”

 

Helping people heal and watching them get stronger, feel more empowered, have less pain, and do the things they want to do (like strolling along at a music festival) brings me so much joy! Enjoying an outdoor summer festival is an amazing side-effect of treatment.

 

Summer is the most expansive season in Chinese Medicine and the perfect time of year to get outside! We can savor and enjoy the longer days, the simmering heat, and we can enjoy sprawling out on picnic blankets in the park.

 

What have you been wanting to do to expand your sense of relaxation and ease?

 

What helps you feel like you’re enjoying your peak vitality?

 

If you’re not sure how to answer these questions, here’s an exercise to help you envision how you can relax and expand.

 

  1. Find a comfortable place to sit down for 5-10 minutes, where you won’t be disturbed.

  2. Close your eyes and take a few nice deep breaths in and out.

  3. Bring your attention to your heart space, in the center of your chest.

  4. Bring one (or both) hand(s) to your heart, if that feels comfortable to you.

  5. Bring to your mind the last time you felt completely relaxed and at ease. What were you doing? Who were you with? How did the room/environment feel? What made that time special and sweet? Take in all of the sensory and emotional details of that experience.

  6. Taking a moment to think through that experience from #5, what qualities do you recognize in that experience that you would like to bring forward? Maybe you realize that that moment felt so expansive because you left yourself some unscheduled time. Maybe it was the company you were with or the activities you were engaged in that made that time special. Identify what qualities you are needing (laughter, sunshine, or unstructured time for example).

  7. How can you bring those qualities into your everyday life? Be creative and be open to unexpected or unusual answers.
