A Meditation on Aging and Loss at the End of the Year
December 31, 2018
Winter is the season of loss in Chinese Medicine. As it was written in 2600 B.C. in The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine (Translated by Maoshing Ni), “During the winter months, all things in nature wither, hide, return home, and enter a resting period, just as lakes and rivers freeze and snow falls.”
As the calendar year winds down and we continue this ascent into the darkness, AND as we turn a new page into 2019, I wish you wellness, contentment, and love. These days might feel incredibly short to you, but take heart, we are gaining a little bit of light with each passing day.
This short video featuring poet Donald Hall is a reflection on aging and loss. It offers us a beautiful meditation on how incredibly precious our lives really are.
Honoring the past and reflecting is a big part of winter. In our willingness to plumb the parts of us that are hidden in shadow, we receive more information about what we would most like to welcome in spring.
May you be bathed in light as you continue your journey. May you be blessed this coming year.
