Let the Light of Summertime Shine Bright in Your Self-Care
July 1, 2019
Happy summer! It’s not just calendar-time summer. I’m starting to feel the full blossoming of the heart that summertime entails in Chinese Medicine theory. It’s the season of the Fire element, of warmth and connection.
A few weeks ago, I gave a talk at the Penn Museum Summer Solstice event called ‘Self-Care in the Summertime.” I really enjoyed helping participants create a personalized self-care action plan. This talk is based on my self-care workbook, which you can download from my website, if you don’t already have a copy. Please feel free to share it with a friend.
One thing that I may not have emphasized enough during the talk is that self-care doesn’t have to be something that you do once a day, or once a week, at a certain time and place and in a certain way.
Self care is dynamic.
While it can involve setting aside time and even going somewhere (like a gym or a yoga class), it’s also a series of decisions, of tiny moment-to-moment choices like drinking some water, breathing, taking a break, or taking a walk outside or even just around your office.
We often discount the power of micro-decisions, but it’s these little choices that make up a big part of our days and our lives.
Today, I would like to encourage you to think about what you want more of. More energy, more connection, more relaxation, or more ease. Then make a conscious choice to check in with yourself several times throughout the day about what will help you get there.
Summer is HOT, to state the obvious. It’s fun to get outside and play, but it can also be draining. Temper that internal friction by making sure that you’re using your energy in alignment with your values.
May you be peaceful, May you be happy. May you be well.
