Finding the Warmth of Summertime, Deep Within Yourself

Because my joints are so naturally expansive (hypermobile), it took me years for me to learn in yoga class that it’s essential to pull in (to strengthen and consolidate) before stretching out. And, in fact, engaging (which always comes BEFORE stretching) is the second principle of Anusara (alignment-based) yoga.
To stay grounded and centered, we draw inwards before reaching out into the world.
I was reminded of this fact when I recently watched this short video from my acupuncture teacher Thea Elijah, where she talks about heart-connections in summertime and finding your spine, your backbone, your grounded connection before you blossom and open to others.
Opening requires both courage and vulnerability, which is why it’s even more essential to be grounded before we expand into the world.
Summer is the season of the Fire element, the most expansive and maybe the most expressive of the elements in Chinese medicine theory. A flame can change shape with speed, highlighting the dynamism of connection and communication.
And a flame can also fade out if not fed, which is why it’s important to anchor within and to feed our inner flame with thoughts, words and actions that feel in integrity with the sincere desires of our hearts.
There’s still time to register for my heart-centered in-person yoga offering “Summer Solstice Reset” live at Studio 34 on Friday June 26th at 7pm. The early bird offer runs through 6/16 so register now and enjoy gentle movement followed by a heart-opening restorative practice. Register here through Studio 34.
If you prefer to practice at home, tending to your own heart in the privacy of your home, mark your calendar for my next at home restorative yoga offering on SUNDAY July 26th from 10-11:15am. This offering is donation-based. Register here to receive the zoom link.
And, of course, there is also always acupuncture if you’re looking for a somatic (body-based) experience of relaxation to help you find a more solid foundation to blossom this summer season.
