How Winter Can Help You Reevaluate Your Habits

Winter is a season which demands that we slow down and rest, lest we burn out our energy before the renewal of spring.
It’s a time to explore and reassess our habits, and to pause and check in.
I was reminded of this last weekend while visiting my family in Virginia. My dad and I bundled up to take out the recycling, which did need to eventually be taken out, but, more accurately, I really just wanted to go outside.
I was in business mode, carrying a bunch of plastic, when I noticed that my dad stopped and turned to the open field behind us:
“I sometimes see deer out here. That’s why I always stop and look.”
This moment reminded me to take in all the wonder, and even the possible wonder, that’s all around all of us, all the time.
Have you stopped to savor or survey something lately? If not, try it out.
Are there places in your life that tend to speed by where you could create the habit of stopping to look?
May you be surprised by the beauty this wintertime.
